10 Signs Your E-commerce Store Needs to Replatform

Most stores don't outgrow their platform overnight. It happens gradually — a workaround here, an extra app there — until one day the platform is costing more in patched-together fixes than a proper migration would. Here are ten signs it's worth taking that conversation seriously.

1. Checkout abandonment keeps climbing with no clear cause

If you've optimized copy, pricing and shipping messaging and abandonment is still rising, the checkout experience itself — its speed, flexibility or payment options — may be the platform's ceiling, not something you can fix with a theme tweak.

2. You're paying developers to work around the platform, not build on it

When more of your dev budget goes to hacks that fight the platform's defaults than to actual feature work, that's a sign the platform's assumptions no longer match your business.

3. Site speed keeps getting worse as your catalog grows

Some platforms handle catalog growth gracefully; others slow down noticeably past a certain product count. If performance optimization keeps buying you less time each round, catalog scale may be outpacing the platform.

4. ERP or CRM integration requires constant custom patching

A platform with a thin or awkward API will turn every ERP or CRM integration into a fragile, custom-built connector. If every sync breaks on the next update, the integration layer is fighting the platform.

5. Your platform doesn't support B2B or wholesale the way you need

Custom pricing, quote workflows and company accounts are native on some platforms and bolted-on afterthoughts on others. If you're building B2B logic from scratch, see whether a platform with native B2B support would save you the maintenance long-term.

6. App and plugin costs are quietly piling up

A handful of $30-a-month apps doesn't feel like much individually. Added up over a year, on a platform where that functionality comes standard elsewhere, it's a real recurring cost worth comparing against a migration.

7. Multi-currency or multi-region selling is a constant struggle

If you're expanding internationally and your platform treats multi-currency, multi-language or region-specific tax as an add-on rather than a core feature, growth will keep exposing the same friction.

8. Your team dreads every plugin or extension update

If updates routinely break something and testing them has become a recurring fire drill, that's a maintenance burden a more modern or better-fitted platform can significantly reduce.

9. Competitors' stores feel faster and more polished

Sometimes the tell isn't a metric — it's a feeling. If your store consistently feels a step behind competitors on speed or UX and you know it's not a design problem, it may be a platform ceiling.

10. You're planning a major growth phase and aren't confident the platform scales with you

Replatforming ahead of a growth phase, on your own timeline, is far less risky than being forced into it during peak season because the current platform buckled under load.

What to do next: not every one of these signs means you need to migrate immediately. But if two or three feel familiar, it's worth getting a proper technical audit before committing to another year on the same platform.

How a Replatform Actually Works

A well-run migration maps your existing data, sets up redirects to protect your SEO, and moves product, customer and order history across without downtime that customers notice. It's a bigger project than a theme change, but a much smaller risk than most teams expect once it's properly planned. Our store migration page walks through the process in detail.
